Supreme Court Denies Bid to Rescind Lobstering Closure

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday denied a request to lift fishing restrictions in the Gulf of Maine aimed at protecting North Atlantic right whales, leaving Maine lobster harvesters unsure of what recourse they have.

Justice Stephen Breyer, tasked with handling the emergency filing, rejected the request without comment, The Hill newspaper reported. Virginia Olsen, a lobsterwoman and member of the Maine Lobstering Union, said Friday night that union members had not seen a copy of the ruling. Until they do and talk to their legal team...

Pacific Halibut Biomass Still Low, But Signs of Recruitment Positive as IPHC Nears Annual Meeting

A hopeful sign of recruitment seen in the 2012 year-class, or 9-year old Pacific halibut signaled the best news the industry has heard in recent years at the Interim Meeting of the International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC) last week.

Dr. Ian Stewart presented the results from the summer survey and data modeling, adding that "The 2012 year-class now appears stronger than 2006-2011 and is projected to mature over the next approximately 3 years, but the magnitude remains uncertain."

Opinion: Maine's Lobster Industry is in a Fight For its Survival

Friday's ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold reinstatement of a 967-square-mile lobster fishing closure is another devastating blow to Maine lobstermen.

In October, a U.S. District Court judge in Bangor had ruled that there was reason to question the federal government's decision to close this prime lobstering area for four months this winter. When an appeals court overturned this decision in November, lobstermen who had already set traps in this area were forced to dangerously hurry and take them up, creating economic hardship for those...

Scientists Show Warm-water Habitats Help Fuel Coldwater Fish

Coldwater fish like salmon depend on warm-water habitats more than previously thought, according to new research from the Oregon State University.

In the midst of climate change, this research has important implications for habitat protection and restoration efforts, which traditionally prioritize cold bodies of water instead of those that heat up during summer months, the researchers said in a press release by Sean Nealon.

"We show in this paper by devaluing habitats that are warm in summer we miss their critical ...

How Will Offshore Wind Farms Affect Gulf of Mexico Fishing? Federal Regulators Want to Know

With the development of offshore wind energy in the Gulf of Mexico likely within a few years, federal regulators are beginning to assess how wind farms will affect commercial and recreational fisheries.

On Dec. 15, agencies that regulate offshore energy and fisheries will hold a workshop for the Gulf's fishers. The input they gather will help guide the planning and permitting of wind farm lease areas, and potentially lead to mitigation for fishers affected by turbines, transmission lines and related infrastructure...

Opinion: It Will Take Work to Save Maine's Working Waterfront

For centuries, many Mainers have made their living on the sea. But lately that's becoming harder to do because of what's happening on shore.

Aging piers and deteriorating infrastructure are making it harder for fishermen and others to get to the water. Meanwhile, climate change is making the assets that still exist more expensive to maintain.

Along with development pressure, rising home prices and expanding tourism a picture emerges of the forces that are crowding out water-dependent businesses and the people they employ from the places they...
